About me I "paint" on the computer screen. I almost never work with scanned images. (When I do, the images are my own photographs) Each work is created from a blank "canvas" through the use of software brushes and filter passes. My work is an attempt to illuminate the transcendence embedded in the mundane. I am aggressively a "computer" artist. The tools I work with have only recently become available: I believe that the set of choices available at any point in the creation process is much larger for the digital artist than for artists working with other media. This poses new and unique problems for both the artist and the art world. I can paint like (and unlike) a traditional artist, crop, rotate, solarize and invert images like (and unlike) a photographer, and even work on three dimensional objects like (and unlike) a sculptor - all of these techniques are immediately available at any time in the creation process. At any given point, I can modify the entire canvas as easily as I can place a brush stroke. Earlier canvases can be recycled into features of new images without destroying the earlier image. Final output can be on a wide variety of substrates - some of which may drastically affect the final product. As a result, the image tends to change rapidly - sometimes unexpectedly - as I work, so I tend to see the creation of each piece as a journey through a territory bounded by all the possibilities of color and texture - an "image space". Each piece is as much the result of a process of exploration as it is the expression of an idea. | ||
